Womenade Program FAQs

WomenadeWhat is Womenade?

Womenade was founded in 2002 when Durango resident Jane Dunn read a story about a Washington, D.C., physician who organized a group of women to raise money at a potluck every month to give as a one-time donation to people in need.

The concept was simple: Rather than spend $35 or $40 on a meal out, the women gathered for a potluck dinner and contributed $35 each to a pool of money that they would then donate to people who had applied for the funding. Dunn gathered friends to plan their own grassroots philanthropy program, called it Womenade, and held their first potluck that fall.

Since then, the program has generated thousands of dollars in donations for needs as wide-ranging as a sent of dentures for one woman to travel expenses for a cancer patient. Although Womenade took a vacation last fall with the rapid changes in the executive director's position here at the Women's Resource Center, Womenade hopes to return with the same verve and commitment to the community that it established in 2002.

What's different about Womenade in 2010?

The Women's Resource Center will offer six opportunities for women who care and who want to make an immediate difference in the lives of others through a revitalized "Womenade" Program in 2010. The schedule will include three lunchtime and three after-work "happy hour" events every other month.

The Women's Resource Center agreed to assume administrative tasks associated with Womenade and made the changes after meeting with founding Womenade members in a focus group session last fall. The changes will fulfill the following goals:

  • Fulfill the needs of Womenade applicants more quickly and more frequently. Many of our applicants need assistance immediately. By meeting every other month, our applicants won't have to wait so long for assistance.

  • Provide a variety of opportunities for women to participate.  Feedback from our fall focus group and from informal conversations with our members indicates that many women either don’t have the time to fix a potluck dish for an evening meeting or have to get home to care for their families. Therefore, we decided to add a lunchtime program and scale back the evening program to a simpler “happy hour” format.

The lunchtime events will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., more or less, at the Rochester Hotel. Participants will be invited to bring their own lunch, and the Women’s Resource Center
will provide beverages and a light dessert like cookies, brownies, etc. Suggested donation will be $25.

The evening events will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., more or less, also at the Rochester Hotel. Participants are invited to bring an hors d’oeuvres to share, but bringing food isn’t a requirement to attend. The Women’s Resource Center will provide wine and non-alcoholic beverages. A “donation cup” will be placed by the wine to cover expenses. Suggested donation will be $25.

  • Maintain the grassroots program’s simplicity and hands-on feeling. All funds raised will be awarded to recipient applicants who meet Womenade criteria (still to be formalized), and donors who attend a Womenade event decide who will receive the funding. Any funds not dispersed at one meeting will be rolled forward to the next meeting.
