SAMPLE FUND-RAISING LETTER/E-MAIL

Dear _________

On Sunday, October 8, I will be walking/running in an event that will help transform the lives of hundreds of women in Durango and La Plata County, Colorado.

Run with Purpose is a fundraiser for the Women's Resource Center, a local nonprofit that has been helping women and girls reach their fullest potential, both personally and professionally, for more than 18 years.

I’ve pledged to walk/run _____ miles/kilometers as part of the [Durango Marathon, San Juan Mountains Half Marathon, Telegraph Trail 50K or Horse Gulch 25 K]. I’m asking my family and friends to donate at least $_____ per mile/kilometer that I walk/run.

Last year, the Center served more than 1,200 women -- and they did that by being open only 24 hours per week. This fundraiser will help the agency stay open 40 hours a week in 2007, allowing them to help even more women.

If you are willing to help, checks should be made payable to the Women's Resource Center and should be returned to me before October 8 if possible. All donations are, of course, fully tax-deductible. I’ve enclosed an envelope for your convenience. For more information on the event, visit www.wrcdurango.org/run_with_purpose.

Thanks for supporting a cause I care about, and thanks for supporting my fitness goal!

SAMPLE FUNDRAISING E-MAIL (HUMOROUS)

Dear ______________

While I’m not exactly known for my superior athletic ability :), I’ve decided to push my body to the limits and walk/run a marathon/half-marathon this October in Durango, CO. OK, no chuckling out there. I’m really going to do this!

And I’m really motivated to meet this goal because any pledges I collect for each mile/kilometer I walk/run will go directly to support programs of the Women's Resource Center, a local nonprofit that has been helping women and girls for more than 18 years.

The Center serves hundreds of women each year, many of whom have multiple hurdles that keep them from living safe, happy and financially stable lives. I may never have to walk a mile in their shoes, but I can definitely walk ____ miles in support of an agency I know is making a real difference in my community.

If you can help, let me know and I’ll send you specifics on how you can pledge!
