Women’s Resource Center honors FittsMilgrim, Lander
as “Extraordinary Women”

Morgan and Gray with MalickThe Women’s Resource Center of Durango honored two extraordinary women – Victoria FittsMilgrim and Susan Lander – with the Extraordinary Women Awards during its inaugural “Girls Night Out” celebration held Friday, Sept. 11, at the Blue Lake Ranch Ridgewood Events Center.

FittsMilgrim, owner of True Life Coaching and Retreats, was honored as the 2009 Extraordinary Business Woman. And Lander, executive director for Music in the Mountains, was honored as the 2009 Extraordinary Woman Leader. Also nominated were Durango artist and gallery owner Karyn Gabaldon for the Extraordinary Business Woman award and  longtime WRC volunteer Barara Shore and Durango jewelry artist Carol Salomon for Extraordinary Woman Leader.

Donors, Volunteers, Sponsors ListMore than 200 guests at the "Girls Night Out" celebration gave FittsMilgrim and Lander a standing ovation when Executive Director Liz Mora announced them as the award winners.

Event raises $18,000

The sell-out event raised more than $18,000 for WRC programs, but more importantly, said Mora, it gave the center an opportunity "to celebrate all the extraordinary women in Durango and La Plata County."

The evening included a buffet of extraordinary hors d'oeuvres prepared by The Yellow Carrot, wine and champagne served up by a handsome trio of bartenders, who included Mora's husband, Roland; her brother-in-law Edward Mora, and friend Ben Carlson.

Master of Ceremonies Beth Warren kept the crowd entertained with her witty repartee, and dancers with Bare Bones Burlesque & the Salt Fire Circus performed several pieces clad in costumes reminiscent of 19th-century burlesque stars.

Malick inspires

Guest of Honor Wendie Malick inspired the audience with her story about finding her voice and using the many public opportunities she has as an actor to make the world a better place. (A copy of her speech may be found online at:)

After landing a role in her first
successful television series, "Dream On," said Malick, "It dawned on me that I was being given the opportunity to use my voice to champion the causes I believed in," including the Humane Society, the Environmental Media Association, the arts and education.

The night also was an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the Extraordinary Woman Awards, established to honor La Plata County women and the significant impact they’ve had in creating stronger women, girls, neighborhoods, and communities. WRC staff and board members forwarded nominees in each category to the Women’s Foundation of Colorado to select the award-winner.

Gretchen McComb, who selected the award-winners on the foundation’s behalf, chose FittsMilgrim for the business award because of her “passion to reach out to women to support them and positively change lives. It’s clear that building a better community is a priority through her affordable group coaching program and her numerous volunteer efforts.

Lander

Lander, who has served as Music in the Mountains’ executive director since 2001, was selected as the Extraordinary Woman Leader because of the many leadership roles she has assumed over the years in La Plata County. Lander is “clearly focused upon building the capacity of organizations and the community they serve,” McComb wrote.

As the MITM executive director, Lander has provided the leadership to expand the festival to a three-week event with more than 40 performances at Fort Lewis College, Durango Mountain Resort, Pagosa Springs, and other venues. She also oversees the Festival Educational Outreach Programs, including Music in the Mountains Goes to School, reaching thousands of students in the Four Corners Region each year, and the Conservatory Music in the Mountains, a summer camp held congruently with a music festival at Fort Lewis.

During her tenure, Music in the Mountains received the 2005 El Pomar Award for Excellence in Arts and Culture. In 2008, the Durango Chamber of Commerce recognized the organization for its "Outstanding Contribution to the Community. Music in the Mountains' attendance has more than doubled under Lander's leadership.

Lander also served as executive director of the Women's Resource Center from 1994-2000, during which time the center's membership gre from 180 to 640 members and the budget increased from $35,000 to $200,000. Many center programs were initiated during Lander's tenure, including "Girls to Women, Women to Girls," "Ready>Set>Go," "Womenfest," "Women's Ink," and others. She also successfully completed a capital campaign to purchase property to provide the center with a permanent home.

She has served on a number of local and state boards and currently serves on the Denver Community Resource Center board of directors, the Durango Area Tourism Organization, the El Pomar Foundation Southwest Regional Committee, the El Pomar Awards for Excellence Selection Committee, and is a member and past co-chair of the 2010the Philanthropy Days of Southwest Colorado committee.
