Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers for Parade of Homes Habitat for Humanity needs a couple of volunteers to staff its Parade of Homes booth in front of its Fox Farm Village homes on Saturday. One or two volunteers are needed for the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift, and Two volunteers are needed for the 1 to 4 p.m. shift. Adult Ed offers Digital Literacy classes The Adult Education Center will offer a Digital Literacy Class from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 22 to Oct. 27. The class will cover computer orientation, keyboarding, Internet basics, Microsoft Word, and an introduction to Publisher. Classes are free to TANF-eligible residents in Southwest Colorado. International Peace Day celebration Durango4Peace will host a number of activities to celebrate International Peace Day on Monday, Sep. 21. A "Walk for Peace" will begin activities at 5 p.m. Participants will gather at the Durango Public Library and will walk to Rotary Park, where a Peace Day Celebration will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. Organizations are invited to set up a booth for the event. Durango4Peace is a non-profit organization working in partnership with the Braided River Mediation Center. The United Nations adopted Sept. 21 as the international day of peach, global ceasefire, and non-violence. For more information, contact durango4peace@gmail.com. Horses and Healing The Medicine Horse Center and the Sexual Assault Services Organization will offer a four-week program for women who are healing from trauma. "Promoting Opportunity in Colorado" presentation set for Oct. 2 The Women's Resource Center and the Women's Foundation of Colorado will host a presentation and discussion on "Promoting Opportunity in Colorado: How Are We Doing" from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Durango Recreation. The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. You may register for this free event at www.blacktie-colorado.com. RSVP code is WFC10/2. Rich Jones, Director of Policy and Reearch at the Bell Policy Center will introduce the "Cycle of Opportunity" concept that illustrates how the Bell Policy Center believes opportunity is created and sustained in the 21st century. The Cycle of Opportunity represents a series of experiences and events that build on one another and accumulate over the course of a lifetie of effort and makes it possible for families and individuals to realize their full economic, social and personal potential. Several measures in the cycle include a healthy birth, a safe and stimulating childhood, graduating high school and earning a livable wage. Following Jones' prsenation, participants will discuss what local governments, school districts, nonprofits and others in La Plata County are doing to affect these measures as well as ideas for future action. Resource Center honors
FittsMilgrim, Lander
FittsMilgrim,
owner of True Life Coaching and Retreats, was honored as
the 2009
Extraordinary Business Woman. And Lander, executive director
for
Music in
the Mountains, was honored as the 2009 Extraordinary Woman Leader. Also
nominated were Durango artist and gallery owner Karyn Gabaldon for the
Extraordinary Business Woman award and longtime WRC volunteer
Barara Shore and Durango jewelry artist Carol Salomon for Extraordinary
Woman Leader.
Event raises $18,000 The sell-out event raised more than $18,000 for WRC programs, but more importantly, said Mora, it gave the center an opportunity "to celebrate all the extraordinary women in Durango and La Plata County." The evening included a buffet of extraordinary hors d'oeuvres prepared by The Yellow Carrot, wine and champagne served up by a handsome trio of bartenders, who included Mora's husband, Roland; her brother-in-law Edward Mora, and friend Ben Carlson. Master of Ceremonies Beth Warren kept the crowd entertained with her witty repartee, and dancers with Bare Bones Burlesque & the Salt Fire Circus performed several pieces clad in costumes reminiscent of 19th-century burlesque stars. Malick inspires Guest of Honor Wendie Malick inspired the audience with her story about finding her voice and using the many public opportunities she has as an actor to make the world a better place. selected as the Extraordinary Woman Leader because of the many
leadership roles
she has assumed over the years in As the MITM executive director, Lander has provided the leadership to expand the festival to a three-week event with more than 40 performances at Fort Lewis College, Durango Mountain Resort, Pagosa Springs, and other venues. She also oversees the Festival Educational Outreach Programs, including Music in the Mountains Goes to School, reaching thousands of students in the Four Corners Region each year, and the Conservatory Music in the Mountains, a summer camp held congruently with a music festival at Fort Lewis. |
