"Girls
to Women, Women to Girls" Conference
WRC staff and Board would like to thank
all of the presenters, career fair participants, and volunteers
for making this year's "Girls to Women, Women to Girls"
conference a huge success. This year's conferences took
place April 23, at Fort Lewis College in Durango, and on April
25, at the Sun Ute Community Center in Ignacio. Students from
Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio, Silverton and Pagosa Springs participated
in the one day conference. The 2008 theme, "Keeping it Real,"
was woven throughout the day's workshops which are designed to
give girls self-confidence as they enter into high school, provide
tools to set healthy relationship boundaries, and encourage interest
in completing higher educational goals. This year's conference
was sponsored by; Meredith Mapel of Coca-Cola Bottling of Durango,
the Hopper Family Foundation and the El Pomar Youth in Community
Service program at Bayfield High School. Feedback from the counselors,
teachers, parents and the girls was overwhelmingly positive, solidifying
the conference's value in the communities it serves.
