Advocacy for La Plata

Advocacy for La Plata, a program of the Women's Resource Center, works with the hardest-to-serve families in La Plata County — those who would not otherwise get their basic needs met through other human service programs. The program follows a holistic, strength-based philosophy of meeting emergent needs and then providing consistent, ongoing support. Advocacy for La Plata has been in existence since 2003 and became a program of WRC in 2007.

Advocacy staff have extensive training in family group decision-making. Because the program is not part of the county human services department, advocates can address myriad needs in a safe, confidential and supportive environment without risk of punitive sanctions.

Clients are often referred to:

• Counseling
• Education
• Financial Management
• Job Training
• Legal Assistance
• Mentors
• Skills Training
• Substance Abuse Treatment

Advocacy for La Plata is a member of the La Plata County Colorado Works Partnership, a coalition comprised of the county’s human services department, the local one-stop workforce center, and other human service agencies and nonprofits working with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) populations.

The program recently received funding to work with fathers as part of the state’s Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Initiative. Services include ongoing case management as well as parenting classes.
