Helpful Community Resources

Resource and Referral

Sometimes the hardest part of getting help is finding out where to go and whom to ask. WRC staff help women navigate the often confusing network of social supports available in the county. We are often the first place a woman seeks information. We guarantee a friendly voice, a warm smile and a safe environment for those who approach us for help in finding the resources they need.

The following links provide contact numbers, e-mail addresses, and web sites for several organizations we refer to on a daily basis. For more information about these organizations and others, please call the Center at 970-247-1242, email programs@wrcdurango.org, or come to our office at 679 E. 2nd Ave., Unit #6, in Durango. Most of the information provided is for Southwest Colorado.

Women Empowering Women

The Women's Resource Center will connect you with a 30-Minute Expert for advice on just about any topic!

Pro Se Divorce Seminars
If you are filing for your own divorce and need assistance filling out the papers, the Women’s Resource Center, Colorado legal Services, the Southwest Colorado Bar Association and the Southwest Colorado Volunteer Legal Aid offer a free divorce seminar on the second Monday of each month. The clinic runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This workshop will cover general information about Colorado family law, including divorce and custody. You’ll learn what papers you need to start the action, general procedures, what to look out for, resources, and other information. Instructors do NOT provide legal advice on individual cases. Divorce paperwork is available at the Women’s Resource Center, 679 E. Second Ave., Suite 6, for $5. For more information, call 247-1242 or 247-0266.

Pro Se Divorce Consultations
The Women’s Resource Center offers one-to-one, 60-minute legal consultations with a lawyer for a nominal fee of $5. Consultations are scheduled on the third Monday of the month, and clients are required to attend the Pro Se Divorce Seminar FIRST, before scheduling an appointment with the legal representative. The program has been made possible by a generous grant from the Colorado Bar Foundation. For more information about the service, contact the Women’s Resource Center at 247-1242.

Womenade (Emergency Financial Assistance)
Womenade is a grassroots fund-raising program the proceeds of which directly benefit women and families who submit applications for financial assistance. Because there are no overhead or administrative costs, thousands of dollars go directly to the women and families in need. Applications are available at WRC, 679 E. 2nd Ave., Unit #6.

Clothing Vouchers and Consultations
Do you need clothing for your job or an upcoming interview? WRC offers vouchers for free professional clothing from the Volunteers of America Thrift Store, located next door to our office, and at the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store. A WRC volunteer is available by appointment to offer advice on how to dress for success in Durango. Call 247-1242 for details.
